Welcome to the latest news-post about The Barn's gardens with Barn Gardener Luci Edwards
The first signs of Spring are emerging in between storms, with beautiful snowdrops and primroses poking up through the frosty grass.
The time for sowing the first seeds of the year is almost upon us. Tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and early brassicas can all be sown in February and March but it's a good idea to keep an eye on the weather unless you have a nice warm window sill to start them off on.
If (like us at the Barn) you rely on unheated polytunnels, it's best to wait a bit until the coldest weather has passed, and be ready with your garden fleece to protect your seedlings during the inevitable cold snaps.
Whilst you're waiting for the warmer temperatures there are lots of jobs to be getting on with. This is a great time to prune old wood away from fruit bushes, spruce up garden beds with new compost, and of course get round to giving your tools a bit of love. And if you haven't already planted garlic in autumn - now is definitely the time!
