Overview

Sunday 3 November 2024, 10.30am to 1.30pm

Ever wondered what strange creatures lie beneath the forest?

Imagine being able to dive beneath the leaf litter and discover a completely new perspective about life on Earth.

Dr. Christian Taylor will introduce to you the Kingdom of Fungi which permeates and connects all other forest life - and without which there would be no forest.

The walk will encompass some of the different habitats at Sharpham Estate and explore them from the perspective of fungi.

As a finale there will be the opportunity to have a small taste of wild fungi, pan fried in our lovely outdoor kitchen (which we cross-check are definitely edible first). Dr Taylor will also bring 1 or 2 well known wild edibles in case we don't find any on the day - eg oyster mushroom, shitake.

This day is for you if you are:

  • curious about the incredible fungi kingdom and how it is critical to all life on Earth.

Please note that we will not be focusing on looking for edible fungi and we can't guarantee that we will find any - it will completely depend on the weather conditions leading up to the event.

You'll experience:

  • the natural history of one of nature's most overlooked wonders
  • the hidden Fungi Kingdom that grows its mycelial networks through roots, leaves branches and soil
  • how these organisms not only interconnect plants, animals and bacteria but also create soil and nutrient cycles that are the foundation of life on land

What should you bring?

  • a drink and a snack
  • warm clothing
  • sturdy but comfortable walking shoes/boots
  • waterproofs (depending on forecast)
  • please wear long trousers (as we will be walking through vegetation on woodland paths with a small chance of ticks)

Schedule

This event runs from 10.30am to 1.30pm.

If you're in a car, park in the Woodland Campsite car park and then we'll meet at The Woodland Campsite at 10.30am.

There will be an introduction there, followed by a gently-paced walk around Sharpham Estate (a walk of 1.5 miles maximum).

The paths are uneven in places and there is a substantial hill to walk down - and then walk back up again on the way back - but everyone can go at their own pace.

The event finishes at 1.30pm.

Without a doubt, Dr. Taylor's evident passion for the kingdom of fungi was passed on to us all
